Abstract

This report describes the results of a study on tourism in the Netherlands. This study is part of a study on tourism in Europe, conducted together with different partners (the ARTIST (Agenda for Research on Tourism by Integration of Statistics/Strategies) consortium) in Europe for the European Commission (EC). The study is carried out within the first workpackage of the ARTIST project. Within the Netherlands, there are a lot of data sources concerning mobility or tourism. Unfortunately, none of the sources gives an integrated view of tourist mobility. Sources found gave either mobility or tourism data. Some sources attemp to make a connection but a complete view is not available. The analyses show a growing mobility and tourism. The growth is found for total tourism in the Netherlands and for tourism of the Dutch people within and outside the Netherlands. The analysis of the determinants has been qualitative, because of the lack of information about tourist mobility trends. The main reasons for the tourism growth are the economical growth and the trust people have in the economy. Other important influences are: prices, population (age, life cycle, and education level), the amount of spare time, weather, and other incentives (like publicity). It is concluded that integrated data sources and further analyses of the trends and factors are needed in the tourist mobility field.
