Abstract

Policymakers are challenged to manage the opportunities of new telematics services based on integration of information technology and telecommunications in the field of traffic and transport. Therefore new policy concepts (integrated transport chains), entrepreneurship and cooperation are needed. A neutral process related and partner role for the Ministry of Transport in the Netherlands and a market driven approach will be illustrated by two cases in the transport of goods sector. The first example is dedicated to the introduction of electronic data interchange (EDI) for intermodal transport of containers. The second example will deal with the introduction of new telematics services for inland shipping based on transponder technology, mobile (data)communication and automatic positioning.
