Abstract

After recommending a multidisciplinary approach to the study of accidents, the methodology is discussed for all accident investigations, in particular for a cost benefit analysis of the effectiveness of safety programmes. Two mathematical models are presented which describe the accident generation process. The first takes into account the drivers' exposure rate and risk, the second describes accidents as a function of vehicle, road, driver and environment.
