Abstract

This paper discusses pan-European automatic fee collection (AFC). Special attention is given to the CASH project for toll payment. This requires interoperability. Interoperability in this respect is "The ability of systems to provide services to and accept services from other systems and to use the services so exchanged to enable them to operate effectively together". Pan-European AFC requires not only technical but also application and procedural interoperability. Important aspects that have to be taken into account for Pan-European AFC are legislation and security. To achieve Pan-European AFC further standardisation and consensus formation is required. (A)
