Abstract

This paper describes the ARTS (Advanced Road Transportation System) in Japan. A brief description of the aims of the system is provided. It aims to provide information to the driver about parking facilities, traffic conditions, and route information. It is also designed to collect tolls automatically, and increase road safety. Information about transport and travel conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport timetables are also available via ARTS. A brief description of the systems architecture is also provided.
