Abstract

The SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research was requested by the Dutch government to develop a scientifically supported, long term concept for the implementation of an essentially safer road traffic system, in close cooperation with other research institutes: this led to a new concept. The new policy vision for a systematic reduction of road hazard is called `a sustainably safe traffic system' or `sustainable road safety'. This brochure gives an idea of what this policy is about. This brochure a) explains the main principles and ideas of the policy; b) illustrates some of its ramifications to areas outside road safety; and c) describes the problems and prospects concerning implementation.
