Towards usability of car-PCs.

Abstract

The goal of this project was to test the conflict between the task of driving, and the task of interacting with a car-PC. Prototype user interfaces and design guidelines were developed combining traditional iterative design techniques with a model-based method for user interface design. The design guidelines were applied successfully together with the method when designing an in-vehicle touch screen solution. The cellular phone was used as the reference system when testing the useability. The touch screen solution was more usable than the cellular phone. The user tests were performed in real traffic, controlled traffic (test lane), and in a heavy vehicle simulator. The design guidelines were the main source of increased useability. The model-based method to user interface design enabled the designing and testing of the prototypes in a structured and efficient manner.
