Abstract

This paper starts by describing the state of the environment in towns as a result of pollution by traffic. It then goes on to outline three main strategies to improve the situation: firstly, by reducing the need for transport, secondly by altering modal split and thirdly by encouraging an environmentally more acceptable management of the remaining motor traffic.
