Abstract

Based on traffic data measured on American freeways in California with 30 sec detector measurements of flow rates and occupancy, recognition and tracking of spatiotemporal congested traffic patterns at freeway bottlenecks are performed through the use of the FOTO and ASDA models. The FOTO and ASDA models are based on three-phase traffic theory by Kerner. These models reconstruct and track the 'synchronized flow' and 'wide moving jam' traffic phases in congested traffic. Results of the models, ie, the recognition and tracking of congested traffic patterns for different freeways in California are presented. Similarities and differences to former investigated situations on German freeways are discussed. (Author/publisher).
