Abstract

A simplified analysis is made of the directional stability and control of a tractor and semi-trailer combination travelling at a constant forward speed in a steady, flat turn. The combined vehicle is treated as a linear dynamic system with three degrees of freedom. Results of a series of sample calculations are presented, to indicate the manner in which steering characteristics and dynamic directional stability are influenced by various vehicle design parameters.
