Abstract

Transport needs for an ageing society (TRACY) is a two year research project funded under the EU FP7 programme. The project has three main aims: * To provide a systematic review of current policies and programmes that address the mobility related needs of older people in the 27 EU states, in associated countries and in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. * To analyse the extent to which this ‘state of the art’ is fit for purpose in addressing transport needs in an ageing society. * To identify research gaps and contribute towards a strategy capable of tackling these needs. The second summary paper forms the third deliverable of Work Package (WP) 5, it summarises the main findings of WP3 as compiled in deliverable D3.2 (WP3-report on “Evaluation of state of the art”). In this brief introduction, an overview about the research steps undertaken is given, followed by a brief outlook to the next stages of the project. In Chapter 2 an overview about the assessment of general and mobility related needs of older people is provided. This step was important in order to finally define quality features of an age friendly transport and mobility system, which are necessary to meet the needs of older people. These quality features will also be referred to as “system qualities”. This section is followed by Chapter 3, which presents main findings of the analysis of transport policies identified in WP2: Those policies with particular focus on older people were analysed within the framework of the system qualities identified in Chapter 2 to determine the extent to which they exhibit factors that enable the transport system to have these quality features. The findings from this working step, and subsequent implications are discussed in more detail in Chapter 4 before a short conclusion brings the paper to a close in Chapter 5. This second summary paper contains basic conclusions of the focussed sections of the large WP3-report D3.2, which provides * a detailed reflection of how government interviewees perceive and appraise the issues related to older people and transport as well as * detailed information on the outcomes of analysing the current situation in terms of transport policies, strategies and programmes.
