Abstract

This study was undertaken to find out the traffic accident risk of disabled drivers having special driving control equipment. The data based on the clients of the Insurance Rehabilitation Agency (IRA) during the years 1987-91, were collected from the records of the IRA, and by mailing a personal questionnaire to all clients, from the years 1992-93. The possible deaths in traffic accidents were checked from the records of traffic insurance companies. The retrospective analysis showed that 7.6 per cent had been involved in some minor traffic accident with no fatalities. It is concluded that in Finland the frequency of traffic accidents among the disabled persons using special driving control equipment is no higher than that among the other drivers.
