Abstract

The paper associates motorised vehicles with a steep and ongoing increase in serious traffic accidents, starting firstly in the USA in the first two decades of the Twentieth Century, and later in Europe after the Second World War. The problem, however, is particularly severe in developing countries where society, institutional conditions and infrastructure are largely unsuited to motorised transport. The traffic accident problem is analysed from a social perspective. For the covering abstract see ITRD E137120.
