Abstract

In this paper, policies to protect the environment in Santiago, Chile, with particular emphasis on air pollution caused by traffic are presented. Background information is given on traffic conditions in the city. Then pollutant emissions are examined. Research leading to the design of policies to control these emissions is given. Finally, current measures are described and the views of government institutions on the long term prospects for reducing air pollution.
