Abstract

The built environment is an important part of the human beings lebensraum and an important factor to contribute to well-being. A well designed environment will facilitate for people to meet, offer security and accessibility to everybody and convey a feeling of identity and belonging. Investing conscious in a sustainable town and village development is one of the most important tasks of the local authorities, to give the inhabitants a secure, nice and beautiful environment to live in. The new Swedish guidelineTraffic for an attractive town is one way to show how the traffic planning could, in an objective way, support the local authority and improve the town's character. The traffic should improve the quality of life, instead of being an end in itself. The main purpose is to integrate the traffic planning in the physical planning. The traffic planning must be carried out in collaboration with all interested parties, citizens, planners and politicians. The first editions of the new guidelines were released in May 2004 and a second edition is already in the process of being made. The second edition is planned to be released in 2006 (A). For the covering abstract of the conference see ITRD E212343.
