Abstract

Traffic calming is the generic term used for a wide range of engineering measures used to keep traffic speeds low. These include various traditional traffic management techniques as well as the use of vertical and horizontal carriageway deflections. This note sets out guidelines to enable Officers to plan safe, cost-effective and appropriate schemes. Detailed information as to the process of implementating traffic calming schemes can be found in 'Traffic Calming : a code of practice' produced by the Safety Engineering Team of the Kent County Council.
