Abstract

This document is a revised version of that originally published in 1990 (see IRRD 846331), and refers to the policies and practices adopted by Kent County Council. It sets out the methodology for developing, constructing and maintaining a traffic calming scheme. The measures available are described, and guidance is given on signing lighting. The legal requirements associated with many schemes are also reported. Many examples are given of typical installations of a wide range of traffic calming measures such as gateways, chicanes, round top and flat top humps, speed cushions and ramped pedestrian crossings. Other methods illustrated include gateways, traffic islands, mini roundabouts and physical width restrictions. Examples are given of suggested layouts and the code of practice of the emergency services is discussed. Recommendations are given on methods of monitoring, and current Department of Transport Regulations and Advice Notes are listed.
