Abstract

Application of traffic calming measures in urban areas in Sub-Saharan Africa is still uncommon, and in most cases limited to the construction of road humps. In the World Banks Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Programme (SSATP), pilot projects are carried out (1995-1998) in four cities with, amongst other things, traffic calming interventions that aim at improving the safety and efficiency of both non-motorized traffic (walking, cycling) and motor vehicle traffic. This paper reports on a range of test interventions in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The first results indicate that low cost interventions, with a high benefit/cost ratio, can improve traffic safety and traffic flow efficiency considerably. The French title of the paper is: "Expériments avec interventions pour calmer le traffic urbain en Tanzanie".
