Abstract

This book provides comprehensive information on the framework for traffic calming in the United Kingdom (UK) and advice on the development and implementation of a scheme. The main body of the book comprises details of 85 case studies intended to represent the experience of traffic calming in the UK. Each includes a brief description covering background information, design details and before and after data on traffic accidents and speed. Techniques covered included: (a) 20 mph zones; (b) chicanes; (c) cycle lanes; (d) environmental improvements; (e) gateways; (f) junction priority changes; (g) junction treatments; (h) mini roundabouts; (i) narrowings; (j) parking; (k) road closures; (l) road humps; (m) rumble strips; (n) speed cameras; (o) speed cushions; (p) surface treatments; (q) visual effects; and (r) no humps.
