Abstract

This book provides an introduction to traffic calming, considers traffic calming in context, and the design and implementation of traffic calming measures. Techniques for traffic calming are described in detail, including vertical or horizontal deflections, traffic management / control, traffic signs, road markings and lighting, area-wide treatments, enforcement activity, community involvement, the needs of special user groups, lessons learned from experience, traffic calming in the future, earlier schemes reviewed, and more recent schemes. Each of the case studies is fully illustrated.
