Abstract

This issue of Current Topics in Transport includes over 60 abstracts of some of the published literature (reports, conference papers, books and journal articles) on the design and effectiveness of the various measures in use to calm traffic on residential roads. Subjects covered include the specification and design of the various measures, such as road humps and cushions, surface treatments of the road, chicanes, 20 mph speed zones, gateways, speed cameras, mini roundabouts, pedestrian refuges etc. Both case studies and evaluations have been included, with some articles discussing reactions to the traffic calming measures by road users such as emergency services, bus drivers and residents. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 1994 and 1997. Much of the relevant English language literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included with the main emphasis of this issue being on UK practice; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Road Research Documentation (IRRD) database.
