Abstract

This issue of Current Topics includes over 80 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles which focus on the design and effectiveness of the various measures in use to calm traffic on residential roads. Subjects covered include the specification and design of the various measures, such as road humps and cushions, surface treatments of the road, chicanes, 20 mph speed zones etc. Area wide treatments such as home zones, and projects involving public participation are described. Both case studies and evaluations have been included, with some articles discussing the reactions to the traffic calming measures by road users, including cyclists, and residents. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 2001 and 2003. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database.
