Abstract

This Transportation Research Record contains 18 papers on the subjects of traffic control devices, visibility, and rail-highway grade crossings. Specific topics discussed include speed changes due to rumble strips, flashing yellow arrow in left-turn lanes, signing for roundabouts, speed-monitoring displays in school zones, format for guide signs, traffic control device color at transponder-controlled tollbooth lanes, controlling dilemma at signalized intersections, animal advisory messages on dynamic message signs, erratic maneuvers associated with rumble strips, operational impacts of rumble strips, reliability of speed control system evaluations, closed-circuit television digital images with poor visibility, pedestrian visibility in crosswalks, photometric performance and visibility of pavement markings, yellow pavement markings performance at night, roadway luminance induced by fixed roadway lighting, an accident frequency model using zero probability process, and modeling signalized intersections near highway-railroad grade crossings. The 2006 series of the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board consists of approximately 820 papers selected from 2,800 submissions after rigorous peer review. The peer review for each paper published in this volume was coordinated by the sponsoring committee acknowledged at the end of the text; members of the sponsoring committees for the papers in this volume are listed on page II.
