Abstract

Twenty counters have been installed on A roads in the Metropolitan Police District to provide more data on trends in traffic flow in the London area. Four of the counters are sites within the aria of the Laboratory's regular traffic surveys. The remaining sixteen counters are distributed so that there is a counter on one radial and one non-radial road in each of eight geographical zones. Details of the counter sites and the method of selecting them are given. The data from the counters provide estimates of flow for radial and non-radial roads within each zone. The results can be combined to produce an estimate for the whole area. The counts at the new sites started on 1st january 1964. The automatic traffic counts at the five sites in London that are used for the present index of flow shall be continued until 31st. December 1964 to provide an overlap.
