Abstract

A technique is given for analyzing, measuring and describing the traffic operational requirements in terms of number of signalized intersections to be signal-controlled, number of signal control patterns, signal timing requirements, flexibility, etc. Street geometry, temporal variations in the magnitude and direction of traffic flow, and spatial distribution of traffic flow are considered and by an analysis of these three aspects the traffic engineer can define intersections within the area to be controlled that have similar characteristics for all time-periods.
