Abstract

Autoroutes du Sud de la France (ASF), the biggest concessionary company in France, operates a 2500-kilometer motorway network with heavy traffic over a large part of this network. The purpose of this paper is to show how ASF has developed an active information policy over the past 10 years, to keep its customers informed about the traffic conditions on the motorway network. VMS, a dedicated radio station (107.7 FM), and a call center have been progressively deployed to inform customers about traffic conditions before and during the trip. Since the year 2000, traffic information is also available on the Internet. ASF's Web site displays very thorough, useful pre-trip information. Web users can consult real-time traffic information and learn the forecasted traffic conditions for the upcoming days. Since 2001, other motorway operators have joined the ASF technical system for real-time traffic condition information in France. On the Internet, real-time traffic information coverage now reports on 5000 kilometers of motorway network.
