Abstract

Korea Highway Corporation introduced Toll Collection System (TCS) in 1993 for more fast and accurate collection of toll, which is successfully under operation. TCS automatically identifies vehicle types at the entrance tollgates and calculates tolls at the exit tollgates. In addition to these functions, it records departure data (departure tollgate number, departure time, vehicle type, etc.) at the entrance tollgates. It collects arrival data (arrival tollgate number, arrival time, and toll fee, etc.) with departure data at exit tollgates. The Traffic Information Service System (TISS) in Korea Highway Corporation uses these data collected in TCS to provide traffic information such as traffic conditions and travel times between origin tollgates and destination tollgates. This paper aims to describe the TISS developed by Korea Highway Corporation. Korea Highway Corporation completed the first phase of TISS development in 1998. The development of this project is in the second phase. This paper describes the background of development, the environment, system architecture, information services, and future planning in detail.
