Abstract

The EU project DUMAS (Developing Urban Management Safety) was commissioned 1997 to consider current practice of dealing with Urban Road Safety as part of Urban Management and to produce frameworks for the design and evaluation of cost effective and successful urban safety initiatives. The third phase of the project investigates urban traffic management and safety issues in selected towns in the countries of the participating partners. The paper presents some results of the Greece part of the study of management and safety issues of the two Greece towns Larissa and Katerini. It focuses on the implementation of various traffic management projects and the effect on accident rates. Emphasis is put on the extensive pedestrianisation of the two towns and the positive effect in reducing the pedestrian accidents - especially in comparison with other Greece towns.
