Abstract

Extensive traffic measurements and surveys were carried out on a roundabout in Dresden to get reliable information about the traffic quality and the capacity of roundabouts. The studies showed that the empirical investigation results correspond satisfactorily to the theoretical results and that the calculation methods available are suitable for practical use. The studies of the mentioned roundabout with single-lane entries and a single-lane circular roadway showed that, even with a traffic volume of 2500 veh/h, there was still good traffic quality. Based on the investigation results in hand, the capacities of roundabouts with different design were determined and possible operational areas derived with a basic areas derived with a basic requirement that there is enough space for roundabout design.
