Abstract

This chapter addresses the purpose and scope of traffic regulations and includes discussion of one-way streets, reversible lanes and roadways, turn regulations, transit and carpool lanes, pedestrian-only streets, restrictions on types of vehicles, speed regulations, emergency regulations, residential street controls, and other regulations used to obtain maximum efficiency and safety on street transportation systems. Uniformity of traffic regulations and legal responsibility for maintenance of traffic control devices are briefly discussed, since these are essential considerations for the proper functioning of the overall street and highway system.
