Abstract

This paper aims to show the experiments of traffic restraint in existing residential areas of Japan. Firstly, traffic problems in Japan, particularly in residential areas are shown. Secondly, the planning and construction of "Community Street", which was the first form of traffic restraint employing physical measures in Japan, will be described. Thirdly, the spread of area-wide scheme for traffic restraint, called "Road-pia Project" is shown and the effects of the experiment are examined. Finally, some further problems of traffic restraint are discussed.
