Abstract

This study explores the safety of vehicles carting liquefied gases such as liquid petroleum gas by road. Two pieces of relevant research were conducted. The first involved an in - depth, on - scene investigation of all traffic crashes involving vehicles carting or designed to cart liquid fuels, lpg or similar products from mid 1979 to mid 1980. The interaction of the road, vehicle and driver-related factors was studied in the four crashes involving vehicles carting lpg. Only one crash had salvage difficulties and no crashes resulted in product leakage. The second piece of research surveyed the management practices of oil, large and small company managers regarding maintenance programmes, government legislation, company investigation into the background of drivers, driver training and knowledge and application of safety procedures. Responses of companies carting lpg were examined to determine current practices. (Author/publisher)
