This paper describes a recently piloted program to provide professional development for trainee teachers to include traffic safety education (TSE) in school programs. It includes co-operation between three agencies: the University, the Department of Employment Education and Training, and VicRoads. The program targets two groups: Graduate Diploma of Education students; and the schools in which they do their teaching practice. The program shows how student teachers become mentors for the target schools by: undergoing certification of 2 days training in Bike Ed; completing 2 days curriculum training (including: rationale for TSE; integrating traffic safety into the school curriculum; developing a unit of work using VicRoads resources); delivery of the TSE Units the students have developed in selected schools; evaluation of the program; follow up of the student teachers in the school of their first appointment.
