Abstract

In 2007, 41,059 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes — a decrease of 4 percent from 2006 (42,078). The fatality rate per 100 million VMT in 2007 was 1.37. The injury rate per 100 million VMT in 2007 was 83. The fatality rate per 100,000 population was 13.61 in 2007, a decrease of 5 percent from the 2006 rate of 14.30. An average of 112 people died each day in motor vehicle crashes in 2007 — one every 13 minutes. In 2005, motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death for every age from 3 through 6 and 8 through 34.
