Abstract

During the nineties traffic flow and accident rates increased in Latvia. Following the introduction in 1997 of compulsory third party insurance for vehicle owners the number of registered accidents increased even more intensely. The objectives of the investigation presented in this paper are: (1) to analyse the change in accident rates on the main road network starting with the year 1995; (2) to find relationships between average density of accidents and economical losses per kilometre, and (3) to establish relationships between average daily traffic and economical losses caused by traffic accidents.
