Abstract

A study funded by the ICERA Research Department and conducted by ORION Consulting Engineers and the Engineering Research Institute, University of Iceland examined the effects of wind on road safety on two exposed road sections in Iceland. The sites were on either side of the Hvalfjordur submarine road tunnel near Reykjavik. The distribution of strong winds in the exposed areas was mapped. Computerised wind simulations were conducted and wind measurements were made with a vehicle-mounted device. Correlations were made between historical wind records and accident statistics. The relationships between wind speeds and accident category, road surface conditions, vehicle category, wind directions and driving speed were examined. (Author/publisher).
