Abstract

This paper aims to describe the underlying principles of traffic signal clearance interval usage and identify issues related to their application. As a result of their potential impact on intersection safety and operations, clearance intervals should receive significant attention as an operating issue within agencies responsible for traffic signal timing. Information collected during the development of a 1-hr short course on traffic signal clearance intervals, co-authored by the Institute of Transportation Engineers in association with the University of Maryland's Center for Advanced Transportation Technology, is the basis of the overview on signal clearance intervals given herein.
