Abstract

Conventional vehicle-actuated traffic signal control has been compared with control using long-loop detectors and an electronic controller. Single thread loops were installed in all approaches to a four-way junction; the controller registered demand and held the green signal while a vehicle occupied the loop, returning all signals to red when no vehicles were present. Significant, reductions of average delay and number of stops were obtained.
