Abstract

The method of the variable gap signal control system, described here, is a type of gap responsive signal control. In this method, delays not only on the response target road but also on the intersecting road are dealt with for the purpose of minimizing the intersection total delays. The delays on the response target road, which will be reduced by extending the green signal of the response target road, are compared with the delays on the intersecting road, which will be increased accordingly, in order to calculate the appropriate gaps for extending and/or terminating the green signals.
