Abstract

The objective of this project is to identify new technological and methodological developments suitable for developing the functional requirements of a future traffic signal controller. The motivation of this project came from the desire amongst road/transport authorities to make better use of advances in processing power and memory availability in the current generation of signal controllers. Further, a new and more open architecture than the one in the current generation of controllers (TSC4/TRAFF) is desirable. A modular, scaleable and open architecture should enable easier programming of controller personality, and facilitate the implementation of advanced control algorithms and various intelligent transport system applications. This report is the second deliverable of the project. Its contents include: 1. introduction and scope; 2. list of reference documents; 3. description of current controller; 4. justification for change; 5. description of proposed controller functionalities and architectural concepts; 6. scenarios for development and operation; 7. possible impacts of future developed controller.
