Abstract

The first half of the paper reviews some of the traffic research carried out at the transport and road research laboratory into the control by microprocessors of isolated traffic signals, the coordination of networks of signals ("fixed time" signal coordination by TRANSYT and traffic responsive signal coordination by scoot), and the design of traffic management schemes in urban areas, using the CONTRAM model. The second part of the paper describes systems and equipment which apply the latest technology: microprocessor based traffic signal controller, signal controller "exerciser", signal performance analyser, signal optical systems, facilities for the disabled (audible signals, tactile indicators, transponders), urban traffic control systems, data communications for traffic systems, variable message traffic signs, and a new motorway communication system. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 275170.
