Abstract

The history of the Japanese traffic signs since 1922 is given and the current trend of sign symbolization in Japan is reviewed. The greater use of symbols which did not require letter or word messages is noted. Included in the symbols used in Japan are heavy use of sign shapes and colours. A discussion is added.
