Abstract

A traffic speed control at the merging point is proposed in order to enhance the safety and efficiency of the highway transport system. Because the merging point is a bottleneck on the highway and also a dangerous point for the unskilled driver, it is a very effective point for introducing AHS: Advanced cruise-assist Highway Systems. The proposed method is divided into four layers, merging sequence assignment, speed control, lane change speed control and vehicle speed control. Some numerical examples show, by computer simulation, that the method can enhance the safety and efficiency of highway traffic. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
