Abstract

This chapter contains descriptions of basic traffic engineering studies. These studies are designed to gather facts on traffic or parking conditions. Methods of data collection and analyses are presented, but more detailed descriptions of studies, equipment, personnel requirements, and forms are contained in the Manual of Traffic Engineering Studies. Studies described in this chapter must be adapted to a specific application so that the information gathered is timely, is as accurate and unbiased as possible. The costs involved must also be consistent with the magnitude of the problem, available funds and personnel as well as the needed accuracy. While the types of basic traffic studies have not changed appreciably over the years, the modern equipment available for studies has, in some cases, streamlined the methodologies and personnel requirements for such studies. This chapter updates the procedures for such studies affected by new technologies.
