A common method of measuring traffic safety in different traffic environments is to count the number of accidents and relate these to the traffic volume, for example traffic mileage. This gives the accident rate. This form of measurement indicates nothing of the cost to the community of road accidents. Nor does it take into account the fact that different accident types lead to different costs. The aim of this project is to analyse and compare traffic safety in different traffic environments on the basis of a cost-standardised accident rate. (A)
