Abstract

Education and training are means of improving performance by enhancing the way that work is carried out. Within the context of road organisations, training and education seek to ensure that an organisational culture is developed to strengthen productivity, motivation, team work and communication to facilitate the use of the management systems being used. This is doneby extending knowledge and skills and modifying attitudes so that individuals can work in an economical, satisfying and efficient way. The areas ofdevelopment may focus on management techniques, work methods and practices and also technical skills. To this end this paper presents the required knowledge and a number of abilities and skills that staff in road organisations need to have. Thereafter it shows how education and training may be effected by presenting examples of degree and short programmes currently being offered. The areas that these programmes cover are engineering, road management, financing, road administration and reforms and general skills. Finally a discussion is presented that seeks to raise awareness of the resources and commitment required together with the need for collaboration between academic institutions and the road industry.
