Engaging in traffic is hazardous for the inexperienced cyclist. Especially young children who have just learned how to cycle on the sidewalk or in a playsquare in the neigh- bourhood, are not yet able to recognize potential danger in traffic or toanticipate. The very first encounters with other traffic will generally be in the neighbourhood on an ordinary street. In that case, the safest spot to pull out to, is the sidewalk. Evidently, it is most practical to teach and practice an emergency routine that consists of the compiled skill of fast braking, steering to the sidewalk and stop there. The present experiment is organized to study the feasibility of such a routine.
