Most research shows that driver training programmes are ineffective in reducing the crash rate of novice drivers. This research aims to develop a more effective training programme. The first step is to determine what knowledge to teach and what scenarios to use in teaching knowledge utilisation skills. Progress on this research, which aims to identify novice /expert differences in the perception and interpretation of hazards in the driving environment, is reported below. In addition, we briefly review recent approaches to teaching knowledge utilisation skills.
