Tram and bus prioritisation at traffic signal systems within Green Waves.

Abstract

In cities in Germany, approximately 60% of traffic signals are integrated in Green Waves. Green Waves aim to decrease travel times, enhance driving comfort and reduce fuel consumption and environmental pollution. The Green Wave is a traffic control measure which bundles and efficiently processes motor vehicle traffic on road sections. Humberg's nomogram for a Green Wave time-distance diagram is presented. The integration of public transport in Green Waves is discussed. Traffic signal control can be altered in favour of public transport vehicles. The traffic control measured for public transport prioritisation developed by Gevas Humberg & Partner follows the principles of 'Signal program formation with acrylic phase sequence and fixed cycle time'. This operates hierarchically with different levels of prioritisation for buses and trams. Its application in Munich is described.
