Abstract

The African road system is relatively underdeveloped and backward and is made up mainly of unconnected national networks of varying quality. As a direct result of this gross deficiency in its transport system, Africa remains the least physically integrated region of the developing world. The United Nations economic commission for Africa has prepared an African highway master plan as the basis for the development effort of all other sectors, including agriculture, industry, trade and education and health services.
